Cleto Chiarli produces this traditional Lambrusco di Sorbara called Vecchia Modena. A wine that encapsulates all that the local tradition and territory are able to express through wine. A Lambrusco that is beautiful just to look at, with that deep pink colour. An intense, unabashed scent of strawberry and undergrowth that warms the heart and makes us think of a Sunday outing in the countryside in spring. The taste is fresh, mineral and surprisingly pleasant. Delicate on the palate, it is a wine that proves to be extremely versatile. It can accompany us in a classic aperitif with friends but it is also able to marry well with good Emilian cuisine.
It’s hard to think about the world of quality Lambrusco without pausing for a moment on the Cleto Chiarli Company that has had its roots in the tradition and history of the province of Modena for over a century and a half. A family-run business that for years has been producing millions of bottles of the world’s best-loved sparkling red wine and exporting them to practically every corner of the globe. A story that started with the production destined for the customers of the small family tavern and that culminated in obtaining the “Mention Honorable” at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Today the company can count on a surface area of 100 hectares of vines and, interestingly and uncommonly for the area, makes wine exclusively from grapes grown on its own land.

Intense, enticing aromas of wild red berries, crushed herbs, citrus and white rose come to the forefront on this lovely sparkler. Thoroughly enjoyable, the lithe, savory palate features juicy strawberry, red cherry and orange zest before closing on a hint of fennel seed. Bright acidity and a polished mousse provide freshness and a smooth texture. KERIN O’KEEFE
